Understanding Windows Mobile 6.5 Touch Gestures

Windows Mobile 6.5 supports primary main gestures that together will represent the backbone of the interaction model introduced by the operating system. And make no mistake about it, although Windows Mobile and Windows CE are in no way strangers to touch screen interfaces, the fact of the matter is that gesture support is something entirely new for the Windows operating system designed for mobile phones. However, the introduction of gesture support falls within the Redmond company's general strategy to adopt natural user interfaces across its platforms.

“Touch gestures describe gestures in which you use a finger or stylus to make a short, directional movement over a control or object on the screen. Most gestures are a single stroke. Therefore, they correspond to one finger–down (WM_LBUTTONDOWN) and finger–up (WM_LBUTTONUP) event pair. The exception is double tap, in which there are two finger–down and finger–up event pairs in short succession. Gestures are recognized based on finger–down and finger–up events, plus the direction, position, and velocity calculated by the gesture recognizer,” Microsoft explained .

Select or Tap, Double Tap or Double Select, Hold, Flick or Scroll and Pan are the five kinds of gestures supported by Windows Mobile. Developers looking to take advantage of the Windows Mobile 6.5 NUI should know that Microsoft has published the official documentation associated with using gestures with the operating system. One portion of the resources available is designed to describe the touch gestures. Here is their description according to Microsoft:

Tap - A tap represents the left click of a mouse. The application receives a single GID_SELECT gesture message when the finger–down and finger–up events occur in a defined time period and a specific distance from each other. There can be several WM_MOUSEMOVE messages after the WM_LBUTTONDOWN event and before the GID_SELECT message.

Double Tap - A double tap represents the left double click of a mouse. The application receives a GID_DOUBLESELECT gesture message when the finger–up events occur in a defined time period and within a specific distance of each other.

Hold - The user can press and hold on the screen to represent the right click of a mouse. The application receives a single GID_HOLD message when the finger remains down for longer than a defined time period and all points during that period are within a specific distance. It is followed by a GID_END message on finger–up or at the end of the Hold time threshold.

Flick - The user can move a finger across the screen to initiate per-pixel scrolling, and if this movement is fast enough, scrolling will continue after the finger is lifted. The application receives a single GID_SCROLL gesture message at the end of the movement upon finger-up. A flick frequently occurs after a pan (one or more GID_PAN gesture messages, followed by a GID_SCROLL message, and then a GID_END message).

Pan - The user can press and hold on the screen and then drag the finger in any direction to represent a mouse move event. The application receives one or more GID_PAN gesture messages as the position changes followed by a GID_END when the finger is lifted. Mouse messages are interleaved with gesture messages. Panning can occur after a Hold gesture.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Released to Manufacturing

The Windows 7 client is not the only operating system from Microsoft released to manufacturing. The Redmond company has literally joined its Windows client and server operating systems at the hip following the release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1, and the strategy continues with their successors. Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly codenamed Windows 7 Server, has also reached RTM stage along with Windows 7. Oliver Rist, technical product manager, Windows Server Marketing, has confirmed officially that Microsoft signed off the code for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 on July 22nd.

The “latest release of Windows Server 2008 R2 is now blessed by engineering as ready for the manufacturing process. We're talking final code. Sun shining, birds singing, children dancing in the streets. With evaluation software available for download in the first half of August and the full product available to customers with Software Assurance in the second half of August, RTM is more than just an engineering milestone. Occurring in lock-step with the release of the Windows 7 RTM, these two platforms are now ready for our partners to start testing and installing on their hardware. And that lock-step isn't a coincidence, it's a design goal,” Rist noted.

Microsoft has been little shy of advertising Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 as better together. And the software giant has reasons for doing so. In mid-June 2009 I told you that Microsoft was gearing up to make available for download the second Beta for Forefront Unified Access Gateway. Well, as of July 13th, 2009, customers already testing the edge security solution from the Redmond company, as well as new users, can access and download Forefront Unified Access Gateway Beta 2 completely free of charge. UAG has been designed as a secure application gateway. Customers running the security solution will be able to not only manage, but also control, and optimize access to a corporate network and its associated resources and applications, in remote scenarios. In this regard, the Redmond company emphasized the flexibility advantage for end users, who could still enjoy access independent of whether they connected via managed or non-managed endpoints.

UAG “brings together a variety of remote access technologies such as DirectAccess, SSL VPN, Remote Desktop, web publishing, etc. under one roof and one user/admin experience. This way, administrators can easily roll out access to every type of user (employees, partners, etc) from virtually every location (corporate laptop, home PC, borrowed PC, kiosk, PDAs, etc). Google set to wage OS war with Microsoft

Google Inc.'s entry into the operating system business poses the strongest long-term threat in years to the dominance of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software, according to analysts.

Google last week announced that it would launch its long-anticipated operating system, based on the open-source Linux kernel and built around its Chrome browser, sometime in the second half of 2010. The new Web-centric operating system will be dubbed Google Chrome OS.

Though analysts agreed that the Windows hegemony is safe in the short term, Google has the financial muscle, engineering might and industry clout to survive a long-term battle with an industry powerhouse like Microsoft.

"Google doesn't need an operating system to support its revenue stream," said Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group Inc. "They have lots and lots of revenue from their advertising bread and butter. That means they have [the] staying power that's critically important in this market."

Michael Silver, an analyst at Gartner Inc., said that Microsoft is unlikely to ignore the threat to Windows. "Microsoft, after all, is one of the more paranoid companies around," he said.

He added that Microsoft is unlikely to be adversely affected by Chrome OS in the short term.

Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment on the Google announcement.

Analysts did note that Google must stick to the long, complex grind of developing an operating system if it wants to be successful in that business.

Rebecca Wettemann, an analyst at Nucleus Research, said that in recent months, Google has shut down or stopped supporting several products, including Google Video, Google Notebook, the Jaiku microblogging service and the Dodgeball mobile social network.

"They pick something up, get excited about it and work on it until they find another shiny new object they want to play with," Wettemann said. "My feeling is that Google needs to stop announcing things and instead execute on completing them."

Nonetheless, the Chrome OS plan has attracted the support of several top PC vendors, including Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo Group, Acer and Asustek Computer.

XP SP3 Fails to Handle HD Video Resolutions via Windows Movie Maker

in case you have bought a new HD video camera and are looking to use your Windows XP computer and Windows Movie Maker to put together video content, don't! It's as simple as that, if you indeed want to take advantage of all that the camera has to offer, especially the higher resolution levels.

Microsoft has informed that Windows XP Service Pack 3, SP2 and earlier fail to handle HD video resolutions starting with 720x576 if end users attempt to leverage Windows Movie Maker. The Redmond-based company has noted that end users are bound to be less happy when it comes down to the quality of the video recording and subsequent playback.

“When trying to create a video in Windows Movie Maker on Microsoft Windows XP with a resolution of 720x576 or greater, video recording and subsequent playback may not be smooth, and video frames may be dropped,” Microsoft explained.

According to the software giant, the fault lies exclusively with the precursor of Windows Vista. “This is a known issue with Microsoft Windows XP,” the company stated, but failed to indicate the specific problem. At the same time, users should know that there is no fix for the issue. On top of this, Microsoft delivered no indication pointing to plans to eventually resolving the problem. This is what it advises end users to do, “To work around this issue, record the video at a lower resolution.” Not much of a workaround if you ask us.

Of course that the problem is specific to Windows XP, and perhaps an example of the limitations associated with an operating system delivered initially back in 2001. Windows Movie Maker on Windows Vista or Windows 7 has no issues with HD video resolutions.

“Millions of people are now enjoying high-definition (HD) television in their homes. Now, using the Home Premium and Ultimate Windows Vista editions, you can edit content from high-definition cameras that support the HDV format. You can also edit native MPEG-2 content, the format used in commercial-release DVDs,” the company stated in the description of Windows Movie Maker and Movie Maker HD for Vista.
